Top Things to do
From stunning hikes to sunset sailing trips, discover how to explore the island. There’s more to Corfu than its coastline and beaches. Dig deeper and you will uncover centuries of history in and around the cobblestoned old town capital. One of Greece’s most lush islands, this Ionian jewel is made for hiking enthusiasts with marked trails everywhere you look. On the western and northern coasts, strikingly sculpted cliffs plunge down to cerulean seas. Visit a functioning hilltop monastery that enjoys eye-wateringly beautiful sea views. In an isolated inland village, see age-old olive groves and learn how to identify high-quality extra virgin olive oil.

The Old Fortress
The Old Fortress of Corfu is one of the most impressive fortifications in Greece, it's the first thing most visitors see as they approach the island, welcoming visitors as they arrive to Corfu. Situated on the eastern side of Corfu Town, this fortress occupies a rocky peninsula jutting into the sea. Known as the "Old Fortress" to distinguish it from the "New Fortress" of Saint Mark, it was constructed to defend the town and stands as one of it's most notable monuments.

The Old Fortress offers breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of Corfu Town and the Mediterranean Sea, providing a splendid vista that captures the beauty and heritage of the island. Access to the top of the fortress is via steep steps so be sure to take plenty of water on hot days. There are cafe's and restaurants at the bottom of the fortress.

Near the main gate, you'll find the historical archive, which houses over 600 years of history, and an exhibition space featuring a Byzantine collection.
Visit the Monastery
Situated on a green hill above the beach of Paleokastritsa, stands a large monastery complex dedicated to Panagia of Paleokastritsa (The Virgin Mary). This monastery dominates the area with stunning views of the island and the Mediterranean Sea.
Some parts of this Byzantine monastery date back to 1228, with newer buildings, monks, and the yard dating back to the 18th century. The monastery has a small ecclesiastical museum with rare Byzantine icons, holy books, and other relics. Inside, there is also a traditional olive oil press.

The road to the monastery passes through a forest of olive trees and cypresses, making the ascent a lovely experience either by car or on foot.
