Corfu Climate

Corfu, nestled in the Ionian Sea, boasts a classic Mediterranean climate cherished by visitors and locals alike. This climate pattern creates an ideal environment for the island's rich vegetation, including olive groves and cypress trees, and sets the stage for a delightful Mediterranean experience year-round.

Weather

Corfu is a warm island renowned for its abundant sunshine, especially in the summer months when blue skies and hot temperatures prevail. The island summers are hot and dry, offering abundant sunshine and perfect beach weather. Spring is also a wonderful time to visit, offering frequent sunshine and clear skies. From October to March, the weather becomes more variable, with sunny days alternating with rainy spells, providing a different but equally charming aspect of the island.

Seasons

Spring (mid-March to May): Spring in Corfu is mild, starting with frequent rains that gradually become rarer as the season progresses. As summer approaches the weather warm up, and fine days become more frequent.

Summer (June to August): Summer is hot and sunny, with temperatures often reaching 35°C (95°F) and occasionally soaring up to 40/42°C (104/108°F) during heat waves. Fortunately, being an island, cool sea breezes from the Mediterranean provide balance. If you need to cool down, a dip in the sea is perfect.

Autumn (September to November): Autumn begins warm and gradually cools to milder weather. September still sees many sunny days before the season transitions.

Winter (December to mid-March): Winters are mild and relatively wet, with occasional rain showers contributing to the island's lush greenery. There are moderate sunny days, with occasional cold air outbreaks from the Balkan Peninsula. Nights may experience slight frosts, and in the inland hills, snowfall is VERY rare, but possible.

When to visit

Summer is the peak season on Corfu, when everything across the island is bustling and open for visitors to enjoy. However, during early Spring and late Autumn, you may find that some taverna's and bars, especially those on beaches and in rural parts of the island, are closed. This downtime allows them to make repairs and prepare for the busier summer season, ensuring everything is in top condition when visitors return.

Orthodox Easter is a vibrant and deeply cherished event on Corfu. Locals and visitors alike gather to participate in traditional ceremonies and festivities that span several days. One of the highlights is the spectacular Corfu Town procession on Good Friday, where the streets come alive with religious fervor and cultural heritage. The celebration culminates in a joyous Easter Sunday, marked by throwing pots out of windows in the town and feasting on traditional dishes with the joyful sound of church bells echoing across the island.

For hikers, spring offers ideal conditions with cooler weather and the island blooming with a variety of flora. Autumn is also a great time for hiking. May, meanwhile, appeals to those who prefer cooler and quieter conditions before the peak of summer heat sets in.

What to Wear

If you're visiting in summer, be sure to pack your best summer wardrobe: lightweight fabrics, cool linens, shorts, t-shirts, dresses, and skirts. A light jumper is handy for cooler evenings. Don't forget your swimming costumes and some elegant attire for evening outings and trips to Corfu Town!

For footwear, sandals are perfect for the beach, while comfortable shoes are ideal for exploring town.

We recommend packing a light, showerproof mac just in case of a sudden heavy downpour. While it will be warm, Corfu's tropical-like climate can surprise with brief rain showers.

If you're visiting in Spring or Autumn, pack a few more jumpers and trousers. Ensure your coat is fully rainproof, as there's a higher chance of rain during these seasons.

Enjoy your time in Corfu, whatever the season!

Sun Protection

Don't forget to pack hats, sunglasses, and high-factor UV protection cream when visiting Corfu! The island's sunny climate makes these items essential for staying comfortable and protecting your skin. Remember to keep your sun cream topped up throughout the day to enjoy the sunshine safely. Consider using ocean-friendly sun cream to help protect the local marine environment while you enjoy the beautiful beaches of Corfu.

Mosquitoes

Warmer, humid weather in Corfu can attract mosquitoes, especially in the evening. To prevent bites while outdoors, consider wearing long-sleeved shirts and trousers. Additionally, using an EPA-registered insect repellent can be highly effective. We recommend incorporating essential oils like Citronella, known for its mosquito-repelling properties.

To keep mosquitoes out of indoor spaces, ensure doors and windows are closed with mosquito nets down. This simple step helps maintain a mosquito-free environment inside your property.
